We started out by driving through downtown Portland headed to the Rose Test Gardens. Our guide had been given directions that would have been fine for a small car not so much for a large bus. Branches on trees had to be held back and cars moved for us to make it through a very narrow, windy and steep road. Luckily the gardens and the park they were in were well worth it.
After visiting the Rose Gardens we headed south to the coast and to Cannon Beach. This is a beautiful little seaside town. There were many small boutique type shops and galleries as well as a wonderful Quïlt shop.
We had several hours here. We shopped for fabric and patterns. Then we wandered past many beautiful homes and gardens. The hydrangeas were stunning and in many vibrant colours. Although the hydranges stood out there were many other beautiful flowers and shrubs too.
Some of us walked out on the beach to get a good view of Haystack rock, a small island just off the beach.
Our stop for the night was Tillamook. An unexpected bonus was a visit to the Tillamook Cheese Factory. We learned about the process of making cheese and watched as huge blocks of cheese were cut into smaller blocks and packaged up for sale.
